This book covers the history of the cheque; key dates during the 350-year lifetime of the cheque; the evolution of the clearing process for sterling cheques, bank giro credits and euro cheques; and, for the first time, the history of the Cheque and Credit Clearing Company is charted from its creation in 1985 to the present day.

The role of the Company, how the central clearing infrastructure is provided and how member banks process cheques are described in later sections.

The Great British Cheque Report

This report, published to mark the 350th anniversary of the cheque in 2009, looks at the history of the cheque and examines its role in British culture and heritage. The Report shows how the cheque’s influence has changed over the years: just 50 years ago it was the only alternative to cash, but since 1990 its use as a payment method of choice has been in decline as consumers and businesses look to use more modern, more convenient and much quicker methods of payment.

Cheques and Cheque Clearing: The Facts

This booklet has been produced to clarify issues about cheques including the clearing process and the 2-4-6 cheque clearing timescales, trends in the use of cheques, cheque fraud scams and how to use cheques safely, and it answers frequently asked questions on all cheque matters.
